Is steam therapy the same as steam inhalation?
Steam inhalation is a popular alternate treatment for common colds. It involves the inhalation of water vapor, and is also called steam therapy. The warm, moist air works effectively when inhaled as it loosens the mucus in the nasal passages, throat, and lungs. This may ease symptoms of irritated, puffy blood vessels in your nasal passages.
The steam inhalation therapy has been known to be a good fix against sinus, cough and common cold. In a recent study it has been found that steam inhalation could also reduce Covid-19 viral load.
According to the researchers, the high temperature generated by the steam has also been seen to reduce the strength of the proteins which leads to drop in infectivity due to the SARS-CoV-2. The study has shown that heat can also denature the SARS-CoV-2 virion’s proteins.
Studies have shown that while steaming the resultant exposure to temperatures of 56 °C for 15 to 30 minutes were enough to breakdown SARS-CoV and SARS-CoV-2, as published in the journal Life Sciences.
The researchers maintained that regular steam inhalation can be effective in damaging the capsid of the SARS-CoV-2 envelope and avert infection.
They further stated that the European Pharmacopoeia VI edition has advised steam inhalations as a procedure to treat other respiratory ailments as well.
Steam inhalation research report in context of Covid-19
For the study, the researchers studied 10 Covid-19 positive people and administered humidified steam through nasal inhalation for a period of 20 minutes (5 sessions of 4 minutes) within one hour for four consecutive days. Their airway mucosal tissues were subjected to the steam.
The temperature of the steam was kept at 55 and 65°C in the first 4 to 5 minutes after the water reached boiling point.
They calculated the viral shedding every twenty four hours. A few of the patients dropped out as they developed some allergic reactions. The remaining participants with an average age of 44years went through the study.
The study disclosed that 60% of the subjects with symptoms reported marked clinical progress at the end of the intervention. A few patients continued to show persistent symptoms of loss of smell and taste even during the study. By the end of the study all patients tested negative. Some patients tested negative just after the first day of steam inhalation on four consecutive swab samples.
Additionally, the researchers observed that all subjects remained low viral shedders three to five days after following the protocol. Also, the patients who developed allergic reaction and dropped out midway had shown a negative swab on inhalation on day one. They alsoshowed weak viral shedding three days later. A final swab on day 10 came negative.
Although the survey was small, it reveals the benefits of steam inhalation evidencing the reduced viral shedding from infected patients.
The team wrote that this could be an “easily available, non-intrusive and cost-effective procedure” which has been established to be effective.
